Cupcake Decorating Party
29 Dec 2013
This past weekend we had a cupcake decorating party for my 4 year old twins and a couple of their friends. The cupcakes and frosting were prepared ahead of time so that the focus remained on decorating the cupcakes.
Cupcake Decorating Theme
We wanted the children to feel like real bakers so we adorned the table with play oven mitts, spatulas, wooden play cookies, plastic cupcakes and birthday candles and confetti. You can also provide the children with kid-sized aprons and chef hats as well.
Our toppings mainly were candy such as sprinkles, gummies, M&Ms, chocolate morsels, marshmallows and more. Your topping selection may include a variety of textures, colors and types of food – crushed nuts if no allergies (peanuts, cashews, almonds), berries (blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries), sprinkles (rainbow color, chocolate), jellybeans, various confetti shapes, candy (m&ms, twix, good and plenty, peanut butter cups), crushed cookies (oreos).
If you are throwing a cupcake or cookie decorating party, a cooking party or a sundae bar party, then the presentation of your topping selection is of the upmost importance. There are lots of creative ways to display your toppings – an egg container, a mini cupcake baking tray, or fancy ice cube trays. You can also just display the toppings in cupcake paper liners or in small bowls. Make your cupcake decorating party more memorable with elegant and unique topping displays!
Decorating the Cupcakes
We let the kids spread the frosting on the cupcakes and explained to the kids how to use the frosting as glue and to add the toppings onto the glue. They had a good time grabbing and scooping the toppings for their masterpieces.
The Finished Product
Wow! The lively colors of the toppings made the cupcakes pop! The kids tried to stuff as many toppings on their frosted cupcakes as could fit. The kids spent so much time putting their toppings on the cupcakes that when it came time to actually eat their creations, they were losing interest as the highlight of the party had passed. This was good for me as a parent because my kids had a blast without ingesting mountains of sugar 🙂
As a working mom of twins, I look out for activities that are easy, quick and budget friendly with a creative flare. Likes to eat the frosting first!
