Fairy Birthday Parties mean glitter. Lots of glitter. This is definitely an outdoor party.
A Brief Introduction of Fairies
Probably the most famous fairy is Disney’s Tinker Bell who first appeared in J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan and its 1911 novelization Peter and Wendy. Tink has appeared in multiple film and television adaptations of the Peter Pan stories, in particular the 1953 animated Walt Disney picture Peter Pan.
Tinker Bell was described by Barrie as a fairy who mended pots and kettles, like an actual tinker. So she is most likely a Brownie type fairy. Brownies are extremely helpful fairies and are the inspiration behind junior guides of the Girl Scouts & Guides.
But Fairies actually predate Disney by centuries and can be found in almost any cultural identity. With a little research you can actually introduce your child to the fairies of their ethnic background. Because there are literally thousands of fairies we will just offer a small breakdown of the most classic forms as inspiration for your child’s party.
A fairy (also faery, faerie, fay, fae; euphemistically wee folk, good folk, people of peace, fair folk, etc.) is a type of mythical being, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural or preternatural. Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and having magical powers. Much of the folklore about fairies revolves around protection from their malice. In modern culture they are often depicted as young, sometimes winged, humanoids of small stature.
A story of the origin of fairies appears in a chapter about Peter Pan in J. M. Barrie’s 1902 novel The Little White Bird, and was incorporated into his later works about the character. Barrie wrote, “When the first baby laughed for the first time, his laugh broke into a million pieces, and they all went skipping about. That was the beginning of fairies.”
Minor female nature deities typically associated with a particular location or landform. There are 5 different types of nymphs, Celestial Nymphs, Water Nymphs, Land Nymphs, Plant Nymphs and Underworld Nymphs. Different from goddesses, nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing.
A type of nymph who preside over fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks and other bodies of freshwater. Great for a Fairy Pool Party.
Dryades or Dryads
In Greek drys signifies “oak”. Thus, dryads are specifically the nymphs of oak trees, though the term has come to be used for all tree nymphs in general. Fantastic Inspiration for a woodland fair party.
In Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books, sprites are a race of fairies with green skin and wings. In The Spiderwick Chronicles, sprites are creatures that resemble insects or flowers. The word “sprite” is derived from the Latin “spiritus” (spirit). Variations on the term include “spright” (the origin of the adjective “sprightly”, meaning “spirited” or “lively”) and the Celtic “spriggan”. The term is chiefly used in regard to elves and fairies in European folklore. Great for a garden themed fairy party.
Because this a fun fantasy theme Fairy Birthday Party invitations are limitless. Use flowers, cards, or even a Fairy puzzle. Make them super exciting with some hints on what to expect and include whether costumes are being worn. Be sure to give the start time, end time, date and location of the Fairy Party.
