Shakur would have been 44 years old on his June 16, 2015 birthday however his life was cut short at the age of 25 when he was shot in Las Vegas in September 1996. The mark left on the music world still lives on today.

I was fortunate enough to meet Tupac on September 4, 1996 at his final public appearance just days before his death. I met Tupac at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards After Party in Bryant Park in New York City. Little did I know, of all the celebrities I met that night, Tupac would have the most impact on the music world.

Tupac’s rap lyrics were powerful yet oftentimes controversial. Nonetheless almost 20 years later his lyrics are still quoted with regularity.

Here are a few favorites:

The only thing that comes to a sleeping man is dreams.

For every dark night, there’s a brighter day.

Reality is wrong. Dreams are for real.

My mama always used to tell me: 'If you can't find somethin' to live for, you best find somethin' to die for.'

Tupac Shakur - Rapper

Why am I fighting to live, if I’m just living to fight? Why am I trying to see, when there ain’t nothing in sight? Why am I trying to give, when no one gives me a try? Why am I dying to live, if I’m just living to die?

Tupac Shakur - Rapper

I’d rather die like a man, than live like a coward.
